Introducing the Acting Dean

I grew up in Christchurch and went to the University of Canterbury from where I graduated with a BSc in Mathematics and Philosophy.

My wife, Helen, and I have been friends since high school, and we married in 1979. I trained as a teacher, teaching at Christchurch Girls’ High School and Marian College.

Early in our marriage, we travelled overseas for six years. Then, from 1988 through 1990, we were at St John’s College, Auckland. We both have Theology degrees from what is now called The Melbourne University of Divinity. I served a curacy at Fendalton Parish, and then was Vicar of Ellesmere. After that, for 24 years, I was Chaplain at Christ’s College. Helen was a Kindergarten Teacher in Beckenham, retiring at the end of 2021.

Our daughter, Catherine, was born in 1990. Many of you will know, she was killed in an adventure activity when she began tertiary studies towards being a Vet. Born in 1992, our son, Jonathan, now based in Whanganui, is completing a Doctorate of Clinical Psychology.

As well as having wide interests In Real Life, I am passionate about the online world – this is the new continent where people live. Since at least 2006, I have grown a strong web presence around worship and spirituality (liturgy.co.nz; @liturgy; fb.com/liturgy; etc).

It is a privilege to be called to be the Acting Dean. I am very grateful to all who helped me to settle in, and to those on whose shoulders this community stands. Please pray for me, as I do for you. Together, we pray and prepare for a future new Dean, and beyond that, to a return to cathedral life in the Square.
